(Seychelles News Agency) - The President of the Seychelles Danny Faure has on behalf of the Government and people of the island nation congratulated Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez on his election as the new President of the Republic of Cuba.

“As distant nations, our friendship is revered as an exemplary achievement of successful collaboration between states separated by geographical space but not in spirit,” said Faure.

The head of state said that “our like-mindedness has created a firm foundation, which we have built upon through open dialogue, shared values, common ambitions and mutual aspiration.”

President Faure said that Seychelles and Cuba share a historic bond of friendship which has culminated in the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

This, Faure said was when Seychelles welcomed H.E. Mrs Mercedez Lopez Acea, Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba, further strengthening the deep bilateral bonds shared between the two island nations.

The President said that “with the election of President Canel Bermudez the people of Cuba have placed their trust in his leadership abilities which will culminate in great success and prosperity for the Cuban people.”

Faure who is currently in the United Kingdom attending the 25th meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) expressed his sincere appreciation to the Former President Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz for his invaluable and historic contributions in paving the way to strengthen the ties between Seychelles and Cuba.

Canel Bermudez’ is the 19 President of Cuba. He was previously First Vice President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers from 2013 to 2018. He was selected to succeed Raúl Castro as President of the Council of State and President of the Council of Ministers on April 18  and sworn into office the next day.

Canel Bermudez’ Presidency is the first time in nearly six decades where a Cuban President is not a member of the Castro family.

President Faure said that “this election signifies a new era, in which Cuba will continue to forge ahead, as proud, determined, and a resilient country making strides not only for the benefit of Cuba but also for the global community.
